The Necessity of Opportunity and Community in a Good SocietyUniversity of California, Berkeley Opportunity and community are two central features of a good society. In the USA, however, due to a cultural emphasis on individualism, opportunity is much better understood than community. The meaning of community is often so vague that its critical role, even in making opportunity possible, is obscured.
