Max Weber and the VallabhacharisThe Vallabhacharis are a Vishnuitic sect of Hinduism and form the largest number of the most important Hindu business people until this day. Max Weber, in his book on Hinduism and Buddhism, devotes about two pages to them, denying a relationship between doctrine and economic performance. This paper shows that he unfortunately had to rely on distorted reports about the sect and that, at a closer look, there are intriguing similarities with later Calvinism.
